From cnn.com WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Senate sidetracked sweeping immigration legislation Friday, leaving in doubt prospects for passing a bill offering the hope of citizenship to millions of men, women and children living in the United States illegally. A carefully crafted compromise that supporters had claimed could win an overwhelming majority received only 38 of the 60 votes necessary to protect it from weakening amendments by opponents. Republicans were united in the 38-60 parliamentary vote but Democrats, who have insisted on no amendments, lost six votes from their members.

I had thought Senate would pass the bill but would have less luck in the House. I don't know about American system ... so what happens next. Does the bill die here or they can bring it back with amendments?

Here is the latest news AP. Updated: 1:12 p.m. ET April 7, 2006 WASHINGTON - The Senate sidetracked sweeping immigration legislation Friday amid partisan recriminations, leaving in doubt prospects for passage of a measure that offered the hope of citizenship to millions of men, women and children living in the United States illegally. The bill gained only 38 votes on a key procedural test, far short of the 60 needed to advance. The vote marked a turnabout from Thursday, when the Senate’s two leaders had both hailed a last-minute compromise as a breakthrough in the campaign to enact the most far-reaching changes in immigration law in two decades.

I really don't understand the US systems. They give benefits to the illegal citizens but cares less about people like us, who maintain our status, pay taxes and live or lives on a bholi ke hola basis. Then there they also give out green card lotterys to people who cannot afford to come here. Looks like they do need workers but take advnatage of good turthful people like us. Can't we get a procession for all H1B holders to tell them to speed up the green card process? Are there any activists around who can arrange for such a rally. I am sure we will have a lot of people supporting this issue. All we want is the immigration office to speed up their work and give us an YES or NO answer so that we can go on with our lives.

There is a bill in the pipeline with increased benefits to the students but how it comes out after it is ratified, if it is, is another story.
