I will be eligible to file US citizenship February first week of 2020 after 5 years on GC. I need to
go to Nepal on July next year which means I have 5 months time after I apply it. So pls advise
who already had citizenship and US passport - if this time will be good enough to get
citizenship plus getting US passport.

Depending upon which state you are applying from? Assuming you are from Boston then it's generally more than 6 months. 5 month may be little short for overall turnaround.

As far as I am aware, you can file for citizenship after 4 yrs and 9/10 months...you do not have to wait for exact 5 years...in that case you can save your 2 or 3 months from there...

ps: this is just my view, please consult your lawyer or other experts too

It took 14 months to get citizen for my parents plus another 1 months to get passport so if you apply now you might get citizen in 2021.Check with your state average processing time.

Thanks all. I will check with lawyer. BTW I live in North Carolina. So it may be faster processing.

It depends from person to person. I got my citizenship oath taken within 3 and a half months from the date of application. On the other hand, one of my friends received his in 14 months. We were both applying from CA. Good Luck though.

It took me 2+ years for me to get citizenship. I applied in early 2017 and get the certificate in mid-2019. I think the processing time also depends upon how the green card was acquired: through relation or employment (mine was employment-based). As Logan said it is taking longer during the Trump period. Those who said they got their citizenship in 3 months must have filed earlier.

Charlotte's processing time as this rn,

6.5 Months to 10.5 Months Application for Naturalization December 26, 2018

Even with a rushed passport service, you're looking at 7 months minimum if you want to travel as a naturalized citizen.

For me it took exact 8 months from filing date to passport in hand in the state of Virginia. Texas is bit longer.

If your citizenship application is pending, you can still go to Nepal and come back, why worry? Just file as soon as you are eligible , 90 days before 5 years on GC.
