Every crisis is an opportunity. There has not been a crisis like this Covid-19 pandemic in our living memory. This pandemic has turned the world upside down and Mother Earth or the higher power, or call it Karma has sent a message that whatever was going on in this world was dead wrong. The energy system based on fossil fuel, the growing temperature of Earth, the rising political strife between China and the US, they were all not suitable for humans, the self-declared intelligent species.

The problem was with the system in place with misguided values humanity has created. All the human pursuit tended to be fixated in the accumulation of material objects than inculcating soulful, heartfelt relationships and living in unity with the planet that nurtures every atom in the sphere.

You can imagine how serious the case must have become when the leading nation in the world is led by a narcissistic thug, insensitive to anyone and everyone, and obsessed with overturning gains made by the previous president while seeking comfort in being surrounded by sycophants. A man who cannot feel the pain of anyone else, let alone the little children of immigrant families who were separated from their families, and basically stolen away, when it was found that they had no record and were never meant to be returned to the parents. That was just the cruelest example on the card.

A small and perpetually lagging nation like Nepal was also on a path that was dead wrong. Listed among the failed state, it basically was led by slavish goons that were equally insensitive to the needs and aspirations of the voting public as their American counterpart. The so-called Communists had the highest dream of visiting the US and becoming its vassal state. The biggest injustice that was imposed on Nepal was the breakup of its family units. How can a nation survive with broken families?

The biggest problem in Nepal is the fleeing of its population in search of higher education, but worse still for work. The people of the land called Sangrila by explorers in the past saw the gold, not in their own land but in foreign deserts. Estimated foreign labor is up to seven million, maybe eight if all those in India are also included. This is a seriously detrimental development for Nepal.

What this means is that the current families are mostly broken. Unlike the USA where one out of two marriages end up in divorce, and hence broken family is a norm, in Nepal the situation is different, but maybe worse. It gives an idea to the little children that families are meant to be separated, one of the parents being away for work means good for the family. It is a very depressing idea to impose on the young impressionable minds, children who grow up broken.

It has been shown in studies that children growing up in broken families have psychological issues. Their development is impaired in ways not thought or considered before. Both male and female figures are needed for a child to be nurtured into young people and robust adults. So, the children might grow up as defective adults, not capable to contribute to society by being balanced individuals.

While the children’s mental development is a serious issue that spells bad for the future, the current family situation is also dismal. Lacking their life partner, one of the partners remaining in Nepal tend to find temptations that are irresistible, and take actions that totally wrecks the families. It is mostly the women that are left behind in Nepal, who end up having an adulterous relationship and even give birth to illegitimate children or in the worst case, elope with their new paramour. I have met some children abandoned by such mothers in the orphanage, and child rehabilitation homes.

So, the silver lining of this pandemic is that people will now realize that it is better to toil at home and be with their families and share the vicissitudes of life. Money is not the only thing. True, they are said to be better, but gold is right here in Nepal if only we could utilize the opportunities with good government policies and leadership. So, it is reasonable to think that people have woken up. They have had some experience of a foreign land and it is up to them to strive to make Nepal better by their examples.

Once we have our villages and cities teaming up with youth returning from abroad, life will be vibrant and small businesses can boom. Agriculture and tourism can flourish and propel Nepal into a high-income nation. And the most positive thing could be that these people have now witnessed the callous and slavish nature of the current lot of political class, so opportunity could arise for new batch of political leaders to emerge, who would definitely give Nepal well-deserved politicians with vision and boldness to stand for the nation and the people.

It is now or never.
