I'm trying to build a career in DevOps. At first, I thought its just learning of some tools to automate everything in Development, operations, testing, deployment etc, Its basically a culture of automation and I get that, and their are tools for that. Now that I'm getting deeper into it a necessity of programming language Python, Ruby, Bash etc...are popping up not only that but Networking,Servers and Linux. Holy Mary there's lot to learn. Did anyone switch to DevOps recently? I've only some sql background. I'm not taking any class and doing self study, do you think its good idea to switch to DevOps and what should I focus on?

I'd say if you have a decent IT background and know the basics of how internet and software development works you should be fine with the side kicks you were talking about.

DevOps again is a generic term, it could mean a lot of different position and technology depending upon a company. But popularity wise , Chef , puppet , git , docker is the buzz these days.

I think DevOps is good career these days as companies move to cloud and develop / maintain their code themselves. A good DevOps I think always must know Linux at least to a basic level. Besides that understanding of database , programming paradigms and Networking is a must.

I am an AWS Certified DevOps engineer. Was the path easy ? Heck No. Is it possible ? Absolutely Yes.

I agree with @fdpower , companies are rapidly moving to CI/CD, so the demand for DevOps engineer is very high.

Start with basics, I would highly highly recommend starting with https://linuxacademy.com/
they offer hands on tutorial ($30/month) subskription. I know I hated to pay upfront as well, but once you get certified from AWS you will thank them more than anybody else.

Consider them as a tuition sir, who is helping you to be a certified AWS engineer.

Also, to consider with that 30 bucks you will have access to 6 Cloud based CentOS PERSONAL servers for you to mess around with.

Good Luck
