I am travelling to Nepal from the US via China (Guangzhou). I am going to be staying at Guangzhou on my way back for a few days. I already got the Chinese visa and hotel reservation. I was trying to get some Chinese Yuan from my bank in the US and I was offered the rate of 1$ = 5.57 CNY. The google rate is 1$ = 6.2 CNY. I have heard that you get better rate if you use ATM in china, but I want to have at least some cash on me so that I am not scrambling to find the first ATM near airport once I get there. I am trying to decide: Should I just get the rate my bank is offering me, or should I try my luck in Nepal itself. Anyone have any experience getting CNY in Nepal?

My suggestion:
- Get it either from USA/Nepal (Not in China). CHina would be your last resort.
What if you desperately need money and you are helpless. Its ok if you loose some dollars in exchange rate but its worth to be well prepared while travelling to China.
- Please also note that its very difficult to communicate specially in China. Forget about day to day conversation at hotel, shopkeepers, living etc. People hardly understood English at the airport itself. I faced that problem Guangzhou, Chengdu, Shangai Pu Dong, Sanghai etc.

BTW, its my personal opinion/suggestion. Other folks can pitch in with theirs.

Other suggestion:
Please use google translator app  (either for IOS or Android) during your stay in China.

Alternatively, you can apply for a credit card with 40-50k bonus points (equal to $400-$500) that come with great perks and no foreign transaction fee.

You can downgrade after 8-9 months to avoid paying an annual fee that's typically charged after enjoying the perks for nearly a year.

I'm contemplating on visiting Hong Kong or Shanghai during my next trip. Please share your experience.
