About the Speaker:

Hem Pokharel has been working on Silvered Ceramic Filters for about 5 years as a Project Manager at Solutions Benefiting Life (www.solutionsbenefitinglife.org), a Boston area-based not-for-profit organization. He manages the implementation of water treatment program in cooperation with manufacturers (potters), collaborators (schools, micro-lending groups, community leaders) and users.

Hem and his team have opened 8 production sites in Nepal where all of the manufacturing and distribution is done by local people so that the money stays in the community and there is a chance for many independent micro-businesses. They have partnered with UNICEF, WHO and Rotary International. UNICEF has been buying the filters from the local manufacturers in Nepal.

Hem has earned a B.S. in Environmental Science from Kathmandu University, Nepal, a B.S. in Geography, and a Certificate in Environmental Studies from University of Massachusetts, Boston.
