"Sarangiko talale mero manako geet gauncha
Lekh dekhi besi samma Gaine meet launcha"

Stephanie A. Spray, a Masters student at the Harvard Divinity School, spent 2001-2002 in Nepal with a Fulbright Scholarship studying the culture and music of the Gandharbas, or Gaine, of Nepal. As part of her project she learned to accompany them in song with the madal, a Nepali folk drum. She hopes to continue her work with the Gandharbas this coming summer and after finishing her Masters. In her presentation she will give a brief talk on what she learned about the Gandharbas, show a few video clips, play music samples, and even play a little madal if someone will volunteer to play sarangi (which
she will provide).

Speaker: Stephaine A. Spray

Stephanie is a graduate of Smith College, where she received highest honors in the Department of Religion. She has also studied some tabla with Homnath Upadhyaya in Kathmandu and Ramu Pandit in Benaras.
