Looking at the news on TV, A chill passes through my spine. Create the same scenario for Kathmnadu, the view will be grraphic. What would be the death toll if an earthquake of 7.5 or more hits Kathmandu? Many wouldn't like to believe but tens of thousands of people will die in the first impact. Many more will succumb to fire, disease and hunger. I am pretty much sure that the government do not have any formidable plan for the disaster of that magnitude. I don't think any body in the government seat is hurried to make action-plan, even after the catastrophes like Asian Tsunami, hurricane Katrina and KAshmir earthquake unfold before their eyes. I don't expect them to have enough manpower and funds for that. So, what do we do? I really don't know the answer.
But, we can make a mind set of what we should do in case such things happen. May be plan the escape route to the nearest open space in your neighbourhood. Remove all the hazardous things from our rooftops. We, Nepalese, have an unusual habit of amassing unnecessary things in our rooftops. Bricks, cement bags, pickle jars, flower pots and lots of construction materials lie in our tops. These things can be lethal weapons that would kill lots of people in the event of an earthquake.
We should make a rescue committee in every neighborhood/ tole. Stock food enough for at least two weeks. Don't expect our government to bring the aid.
