Well, I never went to Trichandra College, but I kept on hearing about Gagan Thapa. My friends would talk about him. Some knew him by person, others had friends who knew him. This was few months back, I opened a news site and found he was arrested for protesting against the royal regime. I had no opinion about that at the particular time. Then, few days back, I opened sajha.com and found that he was going to speak for students at Harvard. I said wow! Cool! Man, is the guy real? Or, he is just a regular student politician, the regular and ample type. If he is real, I would be very happy myself, and its very good for all of us. He needs to get more exposure and platform to engage in nepalese politics. But, if he is the stereo-type, oopportunistic vulture like most of the nepalese leaders, we should stop giving him a platform to talk. If he wants to represent us and our people, he would have to omit few spots from the past. Ofcourse, there were rumors about him. May be they are not all true. May be nothing said is right. But, I have a very honest feeling that we should stop supporting all fake leaders out there, and any one who wants to lead us should pass a litmus test so that we don't end up having same kind of leaders always. I would very much appreciate further discussion in this topic. No harm was intended while I wrote this entry.

G writes: "Ofcourse, there were rumors about [Gagan Thapa]." Those rumors (usually negative) are all FALSE. FALSE, and FALSE (unless proven otherwise) The easiest way to destroy or have fun with rumors ((depending on how you look at them) in Nepal and among Nepali communities about anyone is by saying these: QUOTE: Oh yeah? What you are saying against this person sounds really interesting. Now that you have finished bad-mouthing this person, and now that you have tried to establish that this person is of a khattam characterm do you have solid verifiably true evidence to back up what you have just said . . or are you just saying negative things about this person because you are jealous of him/her or can't stand him for one reason or have some hidden motives of your own or do you have an axe to grind against this person? In otherw ords, what's the BASIS of your story against this person" UNQUOTE My limited experience is that: Ask those questions calmly and quietly, and then sit back, relax and watch that for 99.99 per cent of the time, rumours start to dissolve as the other person starts feeling uneasy and tries to back off. Try it, and see the results for yourself. Of course, those who really, really want to believe the worst about another Nepali even when they have ZERO evidence for their beliefs are in this business of rumour-manufacturing for reasons of religion and NOT for caring about the verifiable truth. oohi ashu

Dear Ashu, Thank you for your reply and another point of view, which I would like to see happen. I would like to see Gagan lead a political force that would exterminate all corrupt powers in Nepalese politics. I would worship him if he leads a movement, a true movement against corruption, poverty and arrogance. And, I don't have any hidden motives. My motives are clear- I would like to see a good person lead a good movement and be a part of that movement that every country loving Nepali should do. Now, that we have seen so many ugly faces in our past, we want to see no more. Its high time we choose a right leader. Is Gagan a real leader? Thats the question of the debate. My friend Ashu, you and us nepalese can not simply afford to have a bad leader again. You and us shouldn't give a bad leader a platform to move his agenda forward. And, Gagan Thapa still hasn't passed a litmus test. I don't mean to say, he wont pass the test. But, as a country loving person, I can not turn myself deaf and blind, I can not loose my mind and follow a guy about whom there are rumors, bad rumors in the world. I would like some body to clarify my mind about him.

Gyanendras, It is too early to tell whether or not the current political crisis is contributing to give birth a fairminded young figure. To this point Gagan seems to stick with his principles of monarchy-less democratic system, caste system, constitutional referendum etc. These agendas which were the forefront of maoist voices when they first took on the battlefield Gagan has tried to direct them towards mainstream political environment. The major obstacle though is he belongs to the party that has only produced corrupt figures esp. after the restoration of democracy and Koiral-ization of NC is inevitable as Koiralas are known to compromise with any other political forces including the despotic monarchy seeking their short-cut to power(a sad reality of Nepal) and the recent convention has contributed for that matter since it has produced more Koiralas.Sometimes too much publicity imposes too much responsibilty on who ever gets the spotlight.Expectation skyrockets and in the end public tend to get disappointed. This situation is inevitable because historically we public tend to expect more from the leadership level but are delived less than our expectations. The epicenter of the problem is not which leader would lead Nepal and Nepalese would finally sense the relief from the maoists but who will be persuasive enough to bring the maoists to the main stream of Nepali politics leading them to give up their arms.Despotic monarch and the corrupt political parties gave birth to the maoists and Gagan comes from the latter. So it is hard to tell.

G writes: " Gagan Thapa still hasn't passed a litmus test." Fine. Who says he has to? And whose litmus test does he have to pass anyway? Certainly, not mine. I would think that there are two ways to judge potentially first-rate people: Potential (when they are young) and delivery (when they are older). Right now, I, for one, am NOT at all concerned about GT's delivery. That can wait for now. He's young enough to still take some years to sharpen his potential to be a great leader. That's because, right now, regardless of whether one agrees or disagrees with his politics, there's no argument that GT shows a lot of potential (in the Nepali political space) -- and that's what has excited a lot of young Nepalis about him. In days and months and even years ahead, let GT MAKE HIS SHARE OF various MISTAKES (you know, the type of mistakes that -- if you read the various biographies of great people jump right at you -- end up toughening up future leaders . . . loving the wrong person, trusting wrong friends, making wrong decisions about events and places, surviving the harsh glare of public light, having the wrong self-discipline and so on and on) AND LEARN FROM THEM VERY QUICKLY so that he can process the lessons and turn all his mistakes/errors/misjudgements into pathways for greater success. [And, I suppose, it's best to make all these kind of mistakes when one is young so that there is time for reflection.] Viewed this way, at this point, I'd worry ONLY if GT came across as a super-perfect person who has done nothing wrong in his life. Such a GT would be a boring and an improbable person. But I'd be comfortable if he made lots of mistakes (now), accepted that he has made mistakes, really learnt from all his mistakes, and then processed the lessons to move on to greater public challenges. That, to me, would mark his journey from potential to delivery. Greate leaders, after all, do not come out of some anti-septic vaccum to live other people's dreams. They come out of their own lives . . . out of how they have handled their own life's successes and failures, and found a way to go ahead when all others said no or impossible. oohi ashu

Well Ashu gives me some good reasons to wait and see. His last paragraph gives a solid punch, and I recieve that well. Besides, Time will be there to tell the actual story. For now, if anybody could confirm me of GT's sincerity, I would get a good sleep tonight. Anyway fellas, lets keep track of GT. Support his case if he appears to be sincere or otherwise. Thanx for the great views.

Regardless whether you like Gagan Thapa or not, you have to admit the guy has the balls to go up against the establishment. I am surprised King and his Cabal let him out of Nepal.

Are you sure he still have balls? Is this the Gagan Thapa, student leader of union affiliated to NC, whose balls (testicles) were crushed while he was under the Gyane's custody? !! People say that Girija had deal with Gyane, and Gagan was accordinly arrested by Gyane's police/army. While others say that Gagan was planted into NC's student union by King G. as a mole. Do you guys know anything more? There were two prominent student leaders of NBsang, one was Gagan and another's name I don't know.. I am not sure which one was taken into custody and then the balls were crushed. If you guys know anythings about it, please post here. RM Neupanejyu, is it really true that Gagan's girlfriend ran away from him and came to US? Are you saying that Gagan is not going to NY but other places so that he will not have to listen all these nonsense?

Darshankaka, This the same Gagan Thapa.Instead of chasing some pointless rumors you should better come up with some solid evidence whether or noor his balls were crushed. If he was planted by the monarchists to penetrate inside the student body he will be punished by the public or by his own wrong deeds(karma). Forget, the Nepali congress I don't see their future after few years. And if Gagan is smart he should(if he has real guts) come out of that polluted meeting rooms with 7 out of 10 heads from the same family blood line. Nepali public have lost their trust completely to this party because it is run by ego-maniacs.Trust me if maoists weren't using violence they are far more better than NC,UML or the monarch atleast they are trying to address the real issues that is felt by the public in the rural Nepal. Only time will tell..

Gagan is a HERO because he stands for 'Republic of Nepal' and he is a Congressi. The commies of Nepal have always been Rupublican. The world of politics is quite strange. I think Nikshay Rana would be a bigger hero if he starts to stand for 'Rupublic of Nepal' as well. Interesting. GT has made Girija and his party to rethink about their status quo of the party, which shows his stregnth. But other than that, GT has a hell lot more to show what substance he is made of. I hope he doesn't turn out to be some Keshav Sthapit some day, and hope he will be able to establish Republic Nepali Congress first.
