Maghe sakranti is the beginning of magh and end of terrible month Paush. People take holy ritual bath or dip is a hot spring.
Maghe sakranti is the day Nepalis eat ghiu-chaaku, tarul, pindalu etc. I don't know why. May be tarul and Pindalu are plentyful in this season.

I believe most people in pahadi Nepal attend Maghe sakranti ko mela somewhere in the area: go shopping for chura, lipstick-powder, sugarcane. Or just have fun.

In POKHARA, the famous mela is (at least used to be) in the south of the city - at Dhunge sanghu. In this part of Pokhara, the famous Seti gorge becomes so narrow, there is a bridge made of ONE flat stone - hence the name Dhunge sanghu. The locals sing Chudka - only musical instrument used is Khainchadi. Song goes like:

Jaunla dhunge sa'un maa
Khaula badam kinera
Launla maaya chinera
la... haii ...
