Hi friends,
I'm  a 5' 10" ,155 lbs & 21y/o male. My family have a really bad heart and back pain history. And, recently I also started feeling back pain so bad. And also feel difficulty when I lift heavy things at work. My body is also not in shape...bank ko hakim jastai bhudi niskina lagyo :(  which is quite depressing.. I always have to wear full shirt. Im so embarrased about my body. I dont even go swimming or to the beach. So, finally I decided Im gonna work out and make some muscles. But, I dont know what to do. I came to know about YMCA which is like 500 meters from my place. They said it will cost me $50 registration fees and $39 per month. And, $99 for 3 one hour long personal training sessions. They've got everything. I can also learn swimming during summer but they will charge more for that. Fitness connection is far but might be cheaper.
So, friends please help me on things like
- if I should start gym or not, about the cost,
-what should I keep in mind before joining the gym,
-other health tips like time of working out..should I eat before or after.

I know you guys have much more knowledge on this...please help a bro out. :)

i used to go to YMCA 2 yrs back. As Far as i know it used to cost me 10 dollars per month and 39 dolllar registration fee. For that u need to apply for discount. i dont know where you are and how it works over there. just go to office and talk with them about the discount.
For training its worthless to spend 100 dollars for 3 hrs. you can research yourself online about the exercise.

5' 10' and 155lbs is not overweight rather it is skinny.
Your BMI is 22.2. Which is way below 25.
I have been exercising continuously for last 4 year and my BMI is 24.

Losing weight is not that difficult. I was overweight and now I am skinny. All you have to do is run at least 2 miles each day and you will see the result in a month. I see lots of overweight people lifting weights in our college gym and they do not lose weight. So going to gym to work on heavy weights will not help to lose weight. Lifting weight is good for people who are skinny but want to build up some muscles.

From my experience, to lose weight you have to do lots of cardios. Although Cardio can also be done in  a gym, it is not necessary. You can go to nearby park and start jogging. Ride bicycle. Keep jogging everyday for as long as you live.

If you take care of your body, your body will take care of you.

thank you so much solu123 for your opinion, you sound very informative. im not actually overweight...only my stomach is big...looks like pregnant girl..aina me herda aafai lai glani huncha...i would do the cardio in the gym and i also wanna build some muscles...so if running was the only reason then i would rather not join the gym...so, from your experience and knowledge...looking at my body datas..can you tell me if im ready to go to the gym or not...would i be able to build some muscles?

5 years ago one of my friends pointed me out that I look ridiculous because of my belly. Then I decided something has to be changed. Those days I did not have a car so I could not go to college gym which was far from home. So I decided to run in a near by park. I would ride my bicycle from home to the park. Then jog two miles and again comeback home on my bicycle.I would do this seven days a week. Also I would ride bicycle  for almost everything. At the end of summer when people returned to school, they could not believe i got so much thin. But these days I do go to gym everyday. I also go to park in the summer. I do lots of cardios and muscles training.

I never changed my eating habits. I think if you keep exercising everyday, you can eat whatever you like and still stay fit.

I remember on my initial days. I could not run at all. I would get tired in two minutes. But as time passed, i improved so much that these days i do extreme exercises.

Heres what i did 4 years ago
Run two miles a day and a mile of bike ride Monday through Sunday. 7days a week.
Got skinny in two months

These days

Monday ------Stairs for an hour
Tuesday ---- weight training 1 hour 15 minutes
Wednesday ---- Run on track 5 miles(8km)
Thursday-----Muscles training weight lifting
Friday---- Cardio on treadmill at highest slope(level 15) for 1 hr fifteen minutes(lose 1200 calories)
Saturday-----one set  of the exercises from p90X
Sunday-----another set of exercises from p90x.

Take at least 100gm of Whey protein before or after exercise.

I have improved a lot and feel great the way I look. I get a lot of attention these days.

abodh

The difference between Nepalese fat and American fat is
Nepalese:---Have big belly and other parts of the body not big(result of Bhaat)
American:- Whole body is fat(result of too much meat and sweet things like chocolate)

Since you fall in Nepali category it won't be difficult for you to remove fat. here are two things you need to do at least for now and i guarantee in two months you will reduce your belly fat.

#1 Run for two miles each day (Mon thru Sun 7days a week). First few days you won't be able to run even 100 meters, you will be tired and breathing fast. You will feel like you wanna quit. But as time passes you will get over it.
After one month try to increase from 2 miles to 3 miles.

#2 Do ab ripper X from p90X three times a week. This won't be easy either in the beginning but you will get over it. If you do not have p90x, you can do any at home ab exercises.

In two months you will see your belly has decreased. You need to take picture of day 1 and day 60 to compare otherwise you won't feel it.

Now if you want really sexy ab then you have to control the diet as well.
For sexy flat ab, you have to quit eating Bhaat.
Start eating any food that has lots of fiber in it.
Also you have to increase your exercise level. But that is for later.

You are thinking about the 100th step without making the first step. First you need to start jogging without making any changes in your lifestyle. As you will progress, you will figure out yourself what to do.

Brother, IF and only IF you are commited for what you are talking, try doing P90X. Cds you can get from cragislist for 60 or so...a chinup bar for 40-50 and may be couple of weights (for you i suggest 10 pnds and 15 pnds dumbell i dont know the price) ...if you want to lose weight while ripping yourself off, follow classic routine, if you want to go lean follow lean routine and if you wanna go all for building muscules go for double-shot. But i suggest you not to go for full routine straight away. Do may be 60% of all exercise with 80% of repetitions required for first couple of weeks. Then go for full work out schedule. believe me it helped me even i am not that commited right now (first 2 mtns i did it all whole heartedly but have been slacking for a month now doing just 4 days a week). So if you want to go and give it . its worth a try..going to gym i was bulking up now i am fit...

@teroobaau,
thank you so much for your opinion..for right now i dont even know whats a p90x..but i have noted that down for future...thanks for the prices..i wont be able to go to gym on sundays 'cause of the timings...so im committing to go mon to sat...first i wanna reduce my belly...and then get in shape overall...'cause even my chest aren't so flat...and then build some muscles...so i think at the beginning i will do some cardios and weight lifting with a day alertnation...thank you!

You said your belly is like the manager of a bank, that was the dumbest thing I have ever heard. You should have told like the officer of Malpot or Bhansar who are ripping off Nepalies.

Your height to weight may need couple pounds. You need to change the habit of your daily schedule. If you love beers, be a social drinker, if you like to eat rice every day, lower your carbs intake , eat healthy , no goat meat or chicken with fat  and do as terobaaje said.

Must human are lazy and we need excuse to do things, you do not need to join YMCA rather you need self-discipline  and dedication. Just joining YMCA does give you 6 pack abs.

Do push ups and sit ups for a month very religiously and eat healthy, you can do some yoga too.  If you can not do it at home then you can do it at YMCA too then do not waste money joining YMCA.
It is not like other gym where you can be a member month to month basis.

@Bhojpure01,
Thank you so much for your opinion. First of all, if you wanna start a fight over the internet which has no purpose, then let me tell you I'm not into those kind of things. What do you mean that was the dumbest thing you've ever heard? May be you haven't heard much more in your life otherwise definitely you would have heard some thing more dumb. And if you're thrashing me for stereotyping, how can you say the officers of Malpot or Bhansar are all corrupts and bank managers are all honest? And, I didnt choose bank managers for being corrupt or anything...yaha bhudi ko kura chaldai cha.
And now that you've started it..lemme show you big holes in what you said:
-What's Nepalies? Naya word aako ho? May be I'm dumb and I didnt know of it.
-When did terobaaje said anything??
-Must human bhaneko k ho?
-Just joining ymca DOES give me 6 pack abs? May be you wanted to say doesnt, right?
-How do I do push ups and sit ups religiously? Tauko ma agarbatti balera ho?
-If you can not do it at home then you can do it at YMCA too then do not waste money joining YMCA.
 How conflicting?
-Who says you cant join month to month basis? Do some research dawg!
Harek post ma aafno euta reply hunu parcha bhanera j paye tei lekhdine??? Smartest person ever!
