buy a turntable, get training whole summer, practice wid ur "homies".. but at the end of the day when u do "DJ" in a party, all i hear is those bloddy HINDI songs.

good knowledge of music, of course and good taste in selection of music too./

one suggestion

don't play your favorite tunes, all the nepali DJs (i've seen) think their favorite music is everyones favorite as well, which is very wrong and a hard lesson to learn being a DJ. Play what the crowd loves even if it means playing something ur not a big fan of

i'd suggest downloading free software, acid pro or frootiloops to get a feel for it b4 u spend money in equipment...

good luck!

I'm not an expert, here's what I know.

Hip Hop Genre:
You've 2 choice: Old School Vs New School
Old School : A good old turntable and lots and lots of vinyl. you'll have to spend time to hunt the vinyl at stores. Time and patience is the factor, of course you'll have to have some technical guidance from a friend.
Pros:You get the respect, more tactile feelings
Cons: Cost of vinyl adds up, bulky to carry the vinyl around, also the needle(cartridge, ????) can be a pain. Less options.
New School : One word---Digital. There's so many products out in the market. Different format from CD, mp3 and even iPod can be used to work around. Look at M-Audio Torqu, Serato Scratch, Pioneer and many many more if you want o begin with.
Pros: Saves money in the long run, more portable since no vinyl disk necessary, more options.
Cons: Old school who do not want to move with time thinks you're a pussy, fake, not real sort of blame games.

Trance, House, Techno Genre:
Don't even bother going the old school. It's just too expensive to collect old synth and equipments. Digital, all software based on your computer is the best. All you need a simple controller and a low latency interface. You're ready! Of course it comes with a learning curve depending on the soft synth or the program you use. Ableton Live, FL Studio,Reason are some all in one package.

With all that said, you've to be creative to please the crowd. The mantra for a good DJ aside being creative are BEAT, TEMPO, BARS, CROSSFADE and CUE.
I've seen fellow Nepali playing a CD just by hitting "Play" and calling themselves DJ during parties.

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of DJ here in Sajha. Please shed some light and help our aspiring Nepali artists.

Rewire summed it all in a nutshell. Try not to be scared to expirement and try to use each and every button that you have at your disposal and tweak it around. that way you will get a sense and a feeling about what everything does, this way you can incorporate your creative ideas using this skill called mixing.

Many people think mixing is simply beat-matching, it is not. Mixing is blending two tracks into one. sometimes a mix sounds better if the beat's are not matched, it all depends on practice and knowing your track, front to back. and back to front

--------Above statement doesn't look good at all.. that is why if you learn to manipulate everything fader and knobs in your position will give you an creative edge and people will appreciate your skills.. you have an advantage over Push and Play DJ's.

Practice practice and Practice.. forget your hommies.. you can't have any of em' around...
Bro djin' is an art, which can be mastered by practicing many hours a week..
you bring your hommies all you do is talk and play and you won't practice... and you will never be good.

GoodLuck

Gorkhali,"Many people think mixing is simply beat-matching, it is not. Mixing is blending two tracks into one. sometimes a mix sounds better if the beat's are not matched, it all depends on practice and knowing your track, front to back. and back to front."

he he Really I guess he's been djing too much at Nepali Parties. he he Smoothness and Beatmatching is the KEY. If you cannot beatmatch and skip the beat it will be like BOOM BOOM BOOM silence... OOOPS BOOM BOOM on the Danced floor. Now if you are playing for knuckleheads they won't know from one beat to another. And tracks are not cake to cut it straight up. Cueing is the key to beat matching. But it also depends upon what Genre and what type of Djing you want to do. Rules for Radio dj's are completely different from club djs. Then comes genre--> what is acceptable in what genre like what in acceptable in Reggae might not be acceptable in Hardcore and what is acceptablein Hip Hop is never acceptable in Techno or Trance. So KNOW YOUR MUSIC very very important to know when your BEAT DROPS otherwise you are headed for straight up TRAINWRECK.

The other thing is what instrument you are using to DJ. I say instrument because Turntables are considered a musical instrument these days. Now it does cost a lot of money to by Vinyls but is probably the best as far as sound is concerned. Besides if you are in a trainwreck its is probably the easiest mode to get your mix back into track by hydroplaning(using y0ur hand to controll the pitch). Whereas you cannot hydroplane very easily in cdjs or laptops.

Bathroom Coffee are you challanging me?????

You talk too much.. you have so much to say for everything., You think you know everything, you butt into everyone's thread and you criticize everyone.... (if you are challanging me about my dj skills... lemme know when and where I will show up with my shit and you better have your game tight.. mr anon)

read properly.. try beat matching 2 hiphop tracks.. beatmatching to the brink only applies to techno, trance ect.   brother beat-matching doesn't mean matching BPM beat to beat..... as long as there is no erractic drumming sound coming out.. the tracks are considered matched and mixed....

That is why I was telling him to get his own style and not follow anyone... there are many many styles of dj'n and there are forms and ways to do it these days..

I don't know where you get it from... try just beatmaching song after song for 4 to 5 hrs.. your name says it all... they will ask you to take a bathroom break and never come back.....

DMC style dj's

DMC style dj's are more fun to watch than trance DJ's... you wanna know why????? cause all they do is beat-match.....

IF YOU WANNA PRACTICE, PRACTICE WITH HOUSE MUSIC FIRST. I PROMISE ITS GONNA MAKE YOU BETTER. HIP HOP COMES LATER AFTER YOU GET WELL WITH HOUSE.
