An international embarassment! Next thing you know, the plane has an accident because the ghosts of the goats are having their revenge!

Report This! By sacrificing the goats they fixed the plane and didn't have to hire a mechanic or electrician -- I now feel perfectly safe flying on Nepal Airline's plane.

Welcome to the Quicki-Mart

Thank you, come again

Report This! Just the fact only those who don't put up a fight are "slaughtered" for sacrifice to imaginary "GODS" is enough for me to conclude the "GODS" don't exist anywhere but in the minds of those who WISH to pretend. "GODS" don't repair airplanes, mechanics do. "GODS" don't want goats slaughtered, people do.

Report This! The crazy thing is that these "developing" societies want all the new stuff -- computers, industry, 757s -- but retain their traditional culture. Folks who sacrifice goats just doesn't seem to belong in the same sentence as folks who buy 757s. Sort of scary when you think of who might get the wrong technology...

ITS BAD ENOUGH WE HORRIFICALLY KILL MILLIONS OF ANIMALS A DAY (and even though i still think its wrong), but AT LEAST WE EAT THEM! (WHICH WE SHOULDNT) THEY SERVE A BIGGER PURPOSE THEN TRYING TO FIX PLANES! SACRIFICING/KILLING ANIMALS IS SICK AND USELESS! THEIR PLANES FLY BAD B/C THEY AREN'T GOOD!!!!!!!

PrincessVeena 08:45:58 PM Sep 05 2007
Report This! err...factual error: the majority of Hindus are vegetarians, so why the **** would they sacrifice goats and buffaloes? I mean geez, they practically worship cows and other animals, so why would they sacrifice them? And sky god? Some people in my family are Hindu and they said they've never heard of a "sky god." Sacrificing goats - that's a theistic-Satanist practice, ********, not Hindu. This is just another way Westerners are trying to make Indo-Asians seem like barbarians. At least Indians aren't the ones starting wars and fighting over religion.

Hyprtalk17 05:52:57 PM Sep 05 2007
Report This! wow. it's a sad world we live in becuase people sacrifice animals?? animal sacrifice is one of the oldest religious rites in human history. It's incredibly naive to say that the world is sad NOW we when WE live in it because people sacrifice animals. They were doing it for thousands of years before Jesus, before Buddha, before Muhammad. what's sad is bright, educated scientifically-minded individuals thinking that they can mix religion and science--myth and fact. What's sad is religions that sacrifice PEOPLE AND Animals. Religion in itself is sad. The blind faith people have in a system of conformity: that's sad.

some different views

linwarfl 05:07:07 PM Sep 05 2007
Report This! The people of Nepal are very religious, FAR MORE SO than Americans. Their moral codes, way of life, and overal "clean" living put us to shame. If sacrificing a couple of goats solved the problem in their minds, then let them have at it. Just because they go about things differently does not make them WRONG. Who says we are correct and have any right to criticize their beliefs and actions?

TIBORSPOON 05:11:20 PM Sep 05 2007
Report This! thank you linwarfl.
I met some hindus when I stayed in Nepal who invited me as a guest to their home in Kathmandu, and I backpacked with a buddhist local for about a week. They were very devout and very respectful of life. It was a great pleasure to have them in my life, they were not heathings.

VeganFitness 03:41:30 PM Sep 05 2007
Report This! To the person who said it's one thing to "kill" an animal for food; think about the "goat" before you take your next bite of dead flesh from the animal that was killed for your food. There is NO DIFFERENCE. Whether for food or sacrifice, it is wrong. What makes one thing worse than the next. NOTHING. You guessed it: I am VEGAN and against the suffering and slaughtering of any animal. For your health and nutrition and for sparing the environment, there are thousands of other food choices out there. Make the switch, I did. THEN NO animal has to suffer at the hands of any human being. Veganfitness@AIM.com

Most of people in Nepal probably think that's it is the right act. Didn't you read the recent article in kantipur by VC of RONAST defending the yagya done for the well operation of RONAST when the papers made mockery out of it?

Animal sacrifice has turned up in almost all religion/cultures be it greeks, hebrews or romans; or islam, christianity, judaism or hinduism.

islams do A LOT of sacrifices during Eid--their major festival. sacrificing animals to appease god(s) is a very common practice among islamics.

although sacrifices used to be an inherent part of the christian culture during medieval times, gospels being the very proof of it, they seem to have banished the tradition while armenian apostolic church among contemporarty christian churches STILL DO practice animal sacrificing.

Jewish are also no exception. fact of the matter, there are quite a few kinds of sacrifices ,viz. guilt-offering, peace-offering, sin-offering and the likes, what are commonly known by a single terminology: 'korbanot'

the points i am trying to make here:

1) the fact that hinduism allows practicing sacrifices, doesn't make it irrational or stupid among other religions, as some of the readers, who posted comments on this particular incident, have pointed out. i am not at all a sincere follower let alone a hard-liner when it comes to religion/culture, but i would like all other religion followers to do some introspection before accusing blatantly and harshly on hinduism for this.

2) although i, myself, strongly discourage people who practice animal-sacrifice, i feel that this news has been mis-interpreted and to some extent-blown out of proportion- for reasons i already mentioned in my earlier posts.

3) the real question, in my honest opinion, which demands more attention and a need to be addressed is: should animal be killed in the first place for human self-motives--eating/sacrificing and all? it's a different issue which needs an explanation beyond self-righteous religious beliefs and hypocritical practice imposed by the culture.

3) let's not be manipulative and be a specimen of embarrassment among international communities for something which has very little adverse implication on human civilization. there are more important issues to be talked about and addressed.

I see that other religions practice animal sacrifice and have been practicing it for long, but I've to start talking against it from my own home. So I'd say - animal sacrifice is a bad culture.

I absolutely agree that there're more pertinent issues to be addressed, but we can't ignore these facts too.

Practicing animal sacrifice by the head of the nation like KG gave panchabali when he visited India, this example of animal sacrifice on aeroplane, and the yagyas done in RONAST do not create a good impression of role model in the society. Other extreme examples are postponing the formation of cabinet by Deuba for the dates given by astrologers, postponing important issues in the country to visit some baba in Bihar or UP by minister Sitaula, the whole country being panicked because some fake 'trishul baba' gave some prediction of earthquake on the particular day. We do look backwards with these kinds of acts.

The person who saw such a dream in which goat be sacrificed to recover technical sang, must be sacrificed at first. Then term come for minister for aviation and general manager.
Its bit harsh but I argue that no technical sang can be recovered just by sacrificing. These people are sick. Such kind of sick are everywhere in our society.

Dui sabda kya?

Loote,
I'll add some more to your list.
The old Inka, Mayans in the America had the same practise. In fact, every civilization once in their lifetime have done some form of animal sacrifice. We can go on and on.It happened a long time ago on their part of history.
I'm not disagreeing with you completely that even these days, it's not rare to hear them happen quite often. But it's not the mainstream culture of these people, the Christian, Jews, Albianian(????) and whateve. It's dum, period, esp when it's done at the tire of a gaint plane (unlike the motorcycle you only ride) which is used by the foreighners(tourism being our main industry)to come inside(step on) to our country.Do you think they'll like that?
It's wrong for these people to say Hinduism is bad, but you've to move with time as well. As you've put up examples, we can go and on. The national Spanish TV is not going to cover the Pappiliona(???) Bull Race(which is oneof the biggest part of their culture), in a shift to discourage the killing. They're listening to the rest of the world who think it's cruel. Some effort.

I think everyone has a point here, personally I am totally against any form of sacrifice. However, I cannot deny the fact that sacrificial offerings are a part of the Nepalese culture. As Loote pointed out that such practices are prevalent in most of the societies. Agreed!!!
But the point here is How can one say that such practise has resulted in the jet being repaired..I mean that is just ridiculous...The concerned person publicly declared this,'The airline said that after Sunday's ceremony the plane successfully completed a flight to Hong Kong'...How can a sacrifice repair a jet??OK!! According to the beliefs it pleases the Sky God, but saying that after the sacrifice the plance successfully completed a flight to Hong Kong is utter nonsense..It makes us look like IDIOTS!!

From somewhere in the internet's domain (last para sums it all up).

Goats sacrificed for smooth flying

KATHMANDU, Nepal, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Officials at Nepal Airlines Corp., plagued by recurring technical problems, say they sacrificed two goats to appease the gods.

The sacrifice was made in front of an NAC aircraft at the airline's hangar at the Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, with airline executives in attendance, ekantipur.com reported.

The airline's top management was consulted before the worship and goat blood were offered to the deity, an NAC official said.

The idea to offer a sacrifice came to an airline engineer who said he dreamed that a deity was angry because the corporation had not appeased him by sacrificing goats, the news agency said.

Here is the news that was first posted in Kantipur on 2nd September. Hope it clarifies some misconceptions that has been made.

NAC sacrifices goats to fix technical snag

BY KRISHNA REGMI

KATHMANDU, Sept 3 - Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) failed to rid itself of the recurring technical problem in its Boeing-757 aircraft, despite its engineering department's untiring efforts.

But believe it or not, Chief of NAC engineering department, PBS Kansakar found the root cause of the problem in his dream last night: God was angry as the corporation had not appeased him by sacrificing goats.

Then, the corporation Sunday decided to worship Lord Bhairavnath, and sacrificed two goats-- one black and another white-so that all would be well with its aircraft.

The sacrifice was offered at NAC's hanger at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) at around 3:45 pm. NAC top bosses, including Managing Director Gautam Das Shrestha were present to offer worship and goat blood to the deity, said an NAC official. "The decision to sacrifice was made after Kansakar consulted with the top management this morning."

The NAC aircraft whose flights had often been cancelled was again grounded last night after its two attempted flights to Hong Kong failed due to repetition of the problem in the anti-ice device.

After operating flights to Dubai and Kuala Lumpur, the aircraft flew for Hong Kong at 8:30 pm last night. "When the aircraft reached 31,000 feet over Biratnagar, its anti-ice devise was switched on. But it would not respond, leading to diversion of the flight to Kathmandu," said Captain Y.K. Bhattarai.

"With two hours maintenance, the engineering department said the problem was fixed. It again flew at around midnight. After flying for around 15 minutes, we checked whether the device was functioning or not at 20,000 feet. But it was not. So, we returned for the second time."

With the problem repeating time and again, the passengers are afraid to fly NAC. "In the first flight, there were 129 passengers. The number was reduced to 95 in the second flight, as passengers became scared," said Bhattarai.

An official at the corporation said passengers have demanded re-routing of their flight as they are afraid to take the NAC flight.

Meanwhile, NAC staffers, including senior officials detained Bikash Karki, a photographer of Kantipur Publications while he was returning after taking photos of the sacrifice.
He was later handed to the TIA security. The TIA freed him, charging him a fine of Rs 226. "I took photos, as other officials were taking photographs using their mobile sets," said Karki.

NAC engineering department officials who snatched his camera and mobile set have not returned them yet. When contacted, Kansakar first said he did not have any idea about the equipment. But, after repeated inquiry, he conceded he had the camera and cell phone.

At the outset- I would like to express my condolence to all the creatures (Not just the two goats) who have been slaughtered (Not just in Nepal but the entire Cosmos) for selfish reasons like food, clothing or rituals. And I offer my prayers to those who are to be slaughtered. May they leave this earth with the least pain possible & May their souls rest in peace. And, May they be allowed to avenge themselves on the man who’s responsible .
Now, coming to the issue of Nepal Airlines (or say “Goat Airlines”), If I would be working for Nepal Airlines, I cross my heart and say this, that I would have smacked The chief of NAC engineering department Mr. PBS Kansakar( the guy who dreamt of the ANGRY sky god) so hard that he would never dare to dream again in his entire life.
This act bears testimony to the sense of superstitions that has degenerated beyond description. This is sheer foolishness!
I keep asking to myself at which point in the long gone past Nepalese’ve got stuck??

sabaiko satru, no culture and no system has the right to turn a blind eye to someone else's right, especially when it comes to animals. Even they have the right to live, don't they?
And, the living godesses doesn't run after a cock or a pig to take it's life, she just sits at her place & minds her own business , so why according to you should she be critisized??
