I just received some amazing news that might be a game-changer for all Nepali students including Noncitizens, Non-greencard holders and those on on F1) ! Several universities in the US recently announced new benefits for students from Temporary Protected Status (TPS) countries, including in-state tuition!

Since Nepal is now designated as a TPS country by USCIS (you can see it here: https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/temporary-protected-status/temporary-protected-status-designated-country-nepal), this could mean Nepalese students might qualify for in-state tuition for many colleges and Universities!

Check with the relevant department at your colleges & Universities and see if this new policy applies to your College or University as well? This would be absolutely fantastic news, and it would make a huge difference for you financially.

Here is a copy of a mail from one of the Colleges

Thank you for your application and congratulations once more on your admission.

In recent weeks several Universities in the United States have extended their policy on the Establishment of Tuition Benefits for Students from Temporary Protected Status (TPS) countries. The benefit allows for the charge of in-state tuition to students who are citizens of a TPS designated country by the U.S. government.

Given that your country of citizenship has been named a TPS country, you may now be eligible for in-state tuition at many Universities until the designation expires by the US Citizenship and Immigration Serves (USCIS). If at any time your citizenship or immigration status should change a review of tuition and scholarship may be done.

In recent weeks the State University of New York System (SUNY), of which this University is a part of, extended their policy on the Establishment of Tuition Benefits for Students from Temporary Protected Status (TPS) countries. The benefit allows for the charge of in-state tuition to students who are citizens of a TPS designated country by the U.S. government.

Given that your country of citizenship has been named a TPS country, you are now eligible for in-state tuition at this University until the designation expires by the US Citizenship and Immigration Serves (USCIS). Upon expiration, the following semester you will move back to an out-of state tuition classification. If at any time your citizenship or immigration status should change a review of tuition and scholarship may be done.

I write to notify you that the merit scholarship initially awarded to you will be reduced and updated to reflect scholarships awarded to those students classified for in-state tuition. You will see these changes reflected in your portal in the coming days.

We are providing this information to you now so you have clear information in advance of beginning your studies with us.
