Time to Raise the Retirement Age!

Our Balen government is coming up with a bill that will now increase the retirement age for our government employees to 60 instead of the 'old' method, where one retires at 58 when our life expectancy was at 60.

This is not a new idea from a new government. This 'retirement age' debate has been going around for centuries, well, for the past three decades.

Experts believe that it will save our government billions of Rupees in pension and gratuity payments over the years, and will not bankrupt the country, which depends on tax revenue to pay our hakims and others, while leaving no money for any development projects.

As an expert in 'age theory' like in game theory, I believe that 62 should be the retirement age for now, and as our life expectancy goes from the current 71 years to 75, then we can set the retirement age at 65, as we do currently for our Supreme Court judges. Our High Court and District Judges retire at 62 now. So, why was there a delay for our civil servants?

The proposed bill also lowers the upper age limit for civil service entry to 32 years for lads and 35 years for ladies. I think the previous one was 35 for males and 40 for females. I disagree with the government on this one. I understand the limit thing for the Police and Army folks but why lower the entry age for others?

And we need a separate Nepal Police Act, end the 30-year service rule, and have them follow a retirement age of 60, or even 62. We have been losing productive and professional senior police officers at the average age of 55 when they still had another five or six years to contribute to the nation.

And we also need a retirement age for our politicians as well. Maybe the Balen government will also come up with a Politicians' Service bill in the future and pass the bill limiting PM tenure to a maximum of two terms and lawmakers have to go home after serving six terms max. And you cannot stand up for election if you are 65 years and 1 day old at the time of filing your thing at the Election office, be it the local, provincial or federal level.

The Balen government is not waiting for the so-called Honeymoon period to be over. They are fast and furious to tackle thousands of problems plaguing this nation for the past thirty years.

Let us support the government and wait for the results in a year ot two not 100 days, or make news about 30 days of Balen government and evaluate their performance right now, while we didn't give a rat's arse when the old jholeys and their Ba or Bas were looting this nation dry for the past three decades.
