Nearly 25 lakh rupees raised by the Help Nepal Network (HeNN) from Nepalis in 14 countries around the world were given out at a ceremony on Monday to fund education programs in Nepal. The money was donated through a program called ‘Rs100 a Month Fund for Nepal’ in which Nepalis all over the world forego a bottle of beer or plate of momo a month and donate it to the network. There are nearly 100 projects in health, education and disaster mitigation. Among the beneficiaries on Monday was a school in Parbat that got nearly Rs 600,000 to build a library, a health post in Dhanusha, a project to train community school teachers in Kavre, help to buy science lab equipment for a school in Ramechhap, a water project in Dhulikhel and nearly Rs 11 lakhs to buy furniture for a community school in Sankhu. “The Help Nepal Network links Nepalis everywhere with a chain of love,” said actor Hari Bansha Acharya at Monday’s ceremony, “the word ‘donation’ now also means ‘do for nation’.” The 100 Rupees a Month Fund also supports e-libraries, infrastructure for schools and health posts, and uses money donated by Nepalis from Austria, Canada, Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Russia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and New Zealand. HeNN’s Rabindra Mishra calls this “practical philanthropy” because it aims to collect small amounts of money from a large amount of people to make a difference. “We encourage Nepalis and those who love Nepal around the world to help Nepalis with health and education in rural Nepal,” Mishra says. Also present on the occasion was Rameswore Khanal, the former finance secretary, who resigned earlier this year after his new minister refused to go after those accused in a fake VAT bill scam. Khanal said Nepalis shouldn’t wait for political stability in Nepal to help or invest in the country: “If we wait for stability we may be waiting for a long time, and many of Nepal’s problems can’t wait.” Khanal added: “Ghettoised affluence is inherently unstable, and will ultimately threaten those who are better off. You are not just helping long-term stability by helping the disadvantaged, but you also gain a lot of personal satisfaction.” HeNN doesn’t use any of the money donated from the 100 Rupees program for overheads and administrative costs. That is all paid from a trust fund of more than Rs 1 crore donated by Siddartha Rana. The new three-person office in Chabel runs on the interest of a trust fund created by Rana’s donation. “Why complain that the government is doing nothing? Little things that we can do ourselves can bring great changes,” says Mishra. A group of second generation Nepalis in London raised Rs 1.2 million running a marathon this year, and the money was handed over for school upgrade projects in Bajura, Sindhupalchok and Morang during Monday’s ceremony. HeNN keeps meticulous records of all its projects and provides detailed accounts of where the money goes. Donors are kept updated about where and how their contributions are being used. Says Mishra: “Not everyone can be a social worker. What we are trying to say is you won’t miss that extra bottle of beer or plate of momo, but it will make a big difference back home, a little can add up to a lot.”

Stiffler, I am pleasantly surprized to see you start this thread on sajha. Instead of envying and feeling threatened by other people's success,  taking the time to admire their accomplishments takes a lot of personal security. It is a quality that very few Nepalese have. Very few Nepalese that I know have the personal confidence to respect and admire other Nepalese for doing things that they themselves have not accomplished.  Most Nepalese that I know are envying other people's success and trying to find some way to put them down. A lot of Nepalese that I know feel gleeful when the successful 'heroes' of our nation fall down. It's good to know that not all Nepalese are like that. Thanks for starting this thread!

Thanks for the kind words but the heroes are the ones who should be glorified. I know many Nepalese don’t see a future in Nepal; not because of the country and its landlocked state but because of the people. Leaders are a natural extension of people (unless it’s a dictatorship) and if the people are corrupt, so will the leaders be. I don’t think I will have much of an argument if I blame the present condition of Nepal to the people, ourselves. We are bhedas; we can’t protest against the fact that a high school drop out is leading our esteemed civil aviation department (NAC), we don’t care if CIAA cannot prosecute against leaders and we put a deaf ear when good people get transferred/sent out; but when Rhitik says a bad word we are on the streets. When, the leaders call us for Nepal bandh, we comply. We are corrupt, when was the last time when you went to Nepal and tried to do something w/o getting an assistance from somebody in a higher-up position that is your aquaintance? We will be discussing about how corrupt our leaders are in a line at airport while waiting to see when our DSP friend will come and rescue us from having to be in the line. Bringing in a constituion won’t do jack unless we change the people’s mentality. But with all this, do I see any ray of hope? What hope you ask? Well for one, our condition is improving. Constitution can’t guarantee many things but if people have enough awareness, constitution will help. In my last visit to Nepal, I was talking to a random kid in restaurant. I forgot the context but I asked him if he knew Nepali national anthem. He did, atleast the first 4 lines. I asked him if he would stand up if it’s played, he said he will if it’s played in a stadium setting. That might not mean a lot to most, but to me that gave me a sack full of hope. I haven’t followed up too much on the facebook Nepal group and I am not sure if the people are really coming because they care about Nepal or they just thought it was cool to do so; heck other countries are doing it right? But I was pleasantly surprised when all the Kathmanduites rallied up to protest against the indefinite Nepal bandh called in by Maoists and showed all the political parties in the country that people are the most powerful entity in the country, not these parties. I smile when I see public officials like Rameshwor Khanal (ex Finance secretary) and justice like Bala Ram KC. They give me a hope, specially after cringing from the sights of the corrupt leaders like Bharat Mohan, Sujata etc etc. These people should be commended for the job they are doing; we need to acknowledge that there deeds won’t go un-noticed. Khanal, KC and Kharel (three Ks) are no longer serving in their original position (Kharel got transferred from KTM, KC had mandatory retirement), partly because of the pressure from the corrupt ones. We gotta support them and make them our real IDOL , real HEROES so more would come. This post is a humble beginning. I wanted to dedicate an entire website for recognizing them (based upon the input from visitors) but what best place for exposure than SAJHA? Help recognize these Heroes who give us hope. Stiffler that is a great idea! If there is a "Heroes of Nepal" website being put up by someone who knows what they were doing, I would be happy to donate some money towards it. To all u guys i wanna give u information that NEPAL is the one of hub point for micro hydro techinque there are lots of nepali engineers working in rural area in microhydro sector (MICRO HYDRO Are smaller project to electrify villages that will be not connected to to main grid for 5 years and every hilly district in nepal has got lots of Microhydro. मै हुँ बेचिएकी, लौ गर बहिष्कार (5 votes, average 5.00 out of 5) चरीमाया तामाङ, सिन्धुपाल्चोक, साउन १७- चरीमाया को हो, सबैलाई थाहा छ। मेरो बाल्यकालदेखि वर्तमानसम्म सबै जानकार भइसक्नुभएको छ। वास्तवमै मनभित्र साँच्चैको ईच्छाशक्ति छ भने ठूलै लडाइँ जित्न सकिने रहेछ। सफलता हात पर्ने रहेछ। आपत्मा फँसेकी नेपाली चेली भएर मैले यो अनुभूति गरेकी छु। बेचिएर म जुन दिन जन्मभूमि फर्केँ, त्यही दिनदेखि मैले मानव बेचविखनविरुद्धको लडाइँ थालेकी हुँ। सातवटा गैरसरकारी संस्थाले मसहित १ सय २८ नेपाली चेलीलाई भारतबाट उद्धार गरेर २०५३ मा नेपाल फर्काएको थियो। साउन ७ गते म ज्यूँदो लास भएर जन्मभूमि आइपुगें। खुट्टामा चप्पल थिएन। लुगाले पूरै शरीर ढाकेको थिएन। समाजमा हेय दृष्टिले हेर्न थालियो। यही परिस्थितिबीच मैले कठिन यात्रा रोज्ने निधो गरेँ- चेली बेचविखनविरुद्ध लडाइँ। मैले यो पनि संकल्प गरंँे- म जुन समाजको सदस्य हुँ, मैले त्यहीँ सम्मानित भएर बाँच्न पाउनुपर्छ। बेचिएर फर्केको केही समयपछि पुनर्स्थापनाका लागि काठमाडौंबाट नवज्योति नामक संस्था गाउँ आइपुग्यो। यो संस्थाको गतिविधि नजान्दासम्म फेरि बेचिँदैछुजस्तो लागेको थियो। बुझेपछि भ्रम हट्यो। त्यही संस्थाबाट बेचबिखनविरुद्ध औपचारिक यात्रा सुरु गरेँ। अनु थापाका नाममा राजधानीमा सहयोग याचना गर्दै हिँड्न थालेँ। पत्रकार र अरू मलाई चिडियाखानाबाट निस्केको जनावरझैँ हेर्थे। 'मलाई अपराधीका रूपमा नहेर्दिनुहोला' - तिनीहरूलाई मेरो आग्रह हुन्थ्यो। ओरेक, नवज्योति, सिविन र एबिसी नामका चार संस्थामा आबद्ध हामी बेचबिखन प्रभावित महिला मिलेर २०५४ मा 'शक्ति समूह' खोल्यौँ। पटकपटक मरेर बाँचेको तीतो अनुभव शक्तिमा बदल्न यो नाम जुराएका थियौँ हामीले। संस्था खोलेको चार वर्षपछि २०५६/५७ मा बल्ल दर्ता भयो। म उमेरले सानै थिएँ। पाँच कक्षामात्र पढेकाले ज्ञान अभाव थियो। अहिले १२ कक्षामा पढ्दैछु। एउटा संस्था दर्ता हुन चार वर्ष लाग्ने? त्यो हामीलाई हेर्ने फरक दृष्टिकोणको उपज थियो। मसँगै उद्धार गरिएका पीडित साथीको अवस्था बु‰न म उनीहरूको घरमा समेत गएँ। मेरो भन्दा उनीहरूको परिवार केही रामै्र थियो। सुरुमा व्यक्तिगत लडाइँ धेरै गर्नुपर्‍यो। दिन त्यस्तै थिए, कसैले पीडितका पक्षमा वकालत गर्दैनथे। समस्यामा परेको व्यक्ति आफैँ अग्रसर हुनुपर्थ्यो। २०५५ सालको एउटा घटना अझै झल्झल्ती याद आउँछ। म आज सम्मानित भएको यही हल हो जहाँ बेचबिखनविरुद्ध कार्ययोजना बनाउने कार्यक्रम थियो। आफ्नै जिल्ला भएकाले शक्ति समूहको प्रतिनिधिका रूपमा म पनि सहभागी थिएँ। त्रुटि नराखी छलफल भयो। 'बेचिएर फर्केका पीडितको पहिचान गरी सामाजिक बहिष्कार गरौँ, यसरी मात्रै बेचबिखन रोकिन्छ' भन्ने निष्कर्ष निकालियो। त्यतिबेलासम्म म प्रभावित महिला भन्ने कसैलाई थाहा थिएन। मलाई असह्य दुःख लाग्यो। मैले आफ्नो पहिचानसहित कडा प्रतिवाद गर्दै भनेँ, 'त्यसो भए ल यही हलबाट सुरु गर्नुस्, मै हुँ, बेचिएर फर्केकी चेली। ल सक्नुहुन्छ भने अहिल्यै मलाई बहिष्कार गरेर देखाउनुस्।' सबै मुखामुख गरेर हेरेको हेर्‍यै भए। समय यस्तो थियो, दलालविरुद्ध जाहेरी दिन जिल्लामा आउँदा मान्छे अचम्म मानेर हेर्थे। अहिले आफैँलाई कसरी गर्न सकेँजस्तो लाग्छ। २०५७ मा छिमेकी गाउँ सिन्धुकोटमा मेरो विवाह भयो। बेचबिखनमा परेकै कारण मलाई गाउँबाट बहिष्कार गरियो। माइतीमा पनि ठूलो समस्या थियो। माथ्लो घरमा दलाल बस्ने, तल्लो घर मेरो माइती। अपहेलना सहँदै दुवै घर मिलाउनु साँच्चिकै चुनौतीपूर्ण थियो। मलाई सहयोग गर्ने आफ्नो घर जाने अवस्था थिएन। आफ्नै गाउँबाट बेचबिखनविरुद्ध अभियान सुरु गर्न सिन्धुकोटमा एउटा तालिम चलाउनुपर्छ भन्ने सोच आयो। यतिसम्म कि पेपर किन्ने पैसासमेत थिएन। लाइन कपीमा निवेदन लेखेर मेलम्चीस्थित गैरसरकारी संस्था महिला आत्मनिर्भरता केन्द्रमा तालिम चलाउन माग गरेँ। बेचबिखनविरुद्ध चार दिनको तालिम गाउँमा चलाएँ। त्यसपछि चरीमाया राम्रो भन्न थालियो। केही राहत महसुस गरेँ। अहिले गाउँमा आँखाको नानीजस्तै भएकी छु। मलाई बेच्ने दलाललाई १० वर्ष जेल भयो। जिल्ला अदालतको निर्णयविरुद्ध उनीहरू पुनरावेदन गए पनि तीसँग बलियो प्रमाण नभएकाले म चुप लागेर बसेँ। आखिर पुनरावेदनले पनि जिल्ला अदालतकै फैसला सदर गर्‍यो। २०५४ मा जेल परेका दलाल २०६४ मा मुक्त भएपछि पनि मैले उनीहरूविरुद्ध फेरि संघर्ष गर्नुपर्‍यो। जेलबाट निस्कनासाथ उनीहरूले मेरा भाइहरूमाथि आक्रमण गरे। मैले खम्बा बनेर फेरि प्रतिकार गरेँ र आवश्यक पर्दा गरिरहन्छु। बेचिएका चेलीलाई पुनर्स्थापनामात्र होइन, भविष्यको बाटो देखाउनुपर्छ। यो अभियानमा लाग्न त्यति सजिलो छैन। बाँच्न धेरै गाह्रो छ। हरेश खानु हुन्न, थाकेर बस्नु हुँदैन। बिहानी हुन कालो रात बिताउनै पर्छ। अप्ठ्यारा आउँछन्, जुध्दै जानुपर्छ। साथ दिने बलियो हात भयो भने केही गर्न सकिन्छ। आफूमा ईच्छाशक्ति भने हुनैपर्छ। तबमात्र सफलता हात लाग्छ। लडाइँ जितिन्छ। -(अमेरिकी सरकारद्वारा 'आधुनिक युगमा दासता अन्त्य गर्न लागिपरेकी नायिका- २०११' द्वारा सम्मानित शक्ति समूहकी अध्यक्ष चरीमाया तामाङले आफ्नो सम्मानमा गृहजिल्ला सिन्धुपाल्चोकमा सोमबार आयोजित कार्यक्रममा दिएको मन्तव्यको सम्पादित अंश) प्रस्तुति : ध्रुव दंगाल/नागरिक

३२ वर्षको कमाई स्कुललाई दान   दिलीप पौडेल, बाग्लुङ, साउन ३- पियनले आफ्नो कति कमाइ बचाउँछ, कति रकम समाजसेवामा लगाउँछ? जैदीस्थित संस्कृत उच्च माविका परिचर होमबहादुर क्षेत्रीले यी प्रश्नको उत्तर आश्चर्यजनक व्यवहारले दिएका छन्, ३२ वर्षे पूरै कमाइ पाँच लाख रुपैयाँ स्कुललाई दान गरेर। 'धेरै पढ्न पाइनँ,' आठ कक्षा पढेका होमबहादुरले भने, 'मैले नपाए पनि अरू वञ्चित नहुन् भनेर सघाइरहेको छु।' उनी २०३५ सालदेखि उक्त विद्यालयमा काम गरिरहेका छन्।       ६० वर्षे होमबहादुरले एक दर्जन विद्यालयलाई चन्दा दिइसकेका छन्। जैदीस्थित संस्कृत उमाविलाई १ लाख १० हजार, कुइधाङ प्राविलाई १५ हजार, सरस्वती निमाविलाई ५० हजार, अर्जेवास्थित जनकल्याण माविलाई ७५ हजार, जनशिक्षित माविलाई ५० हजार, छिस्तीस्थित वसन्त माविलाई २५ हजार र वागलिङ प्राविलाई १० हजार रुपैयाँ सहयोग गरिसकेका छन्। त्यसो त उनले रेडक्रस, स्थानीय युवा क्लब, बाटोघाटो, पुल निर्माणमा समेत सघाउँदै आएका छन्। ठूलो हृदयका उनी स्वयंको आर्थिक अवस्था भने बलियो छैन। बिहानबेलुका छाक टार्न उनले ज्यालामजदुरी गर्नुपर्छ। 'मेरो आम्दानी अरूलाई दिँदै ठिक्क हुन्छ,' उनले भने, 'गाउँ आउने लाहुरेले दिएका कपडाले गुजारा गर्छु।' दिउँसो विद्यालयमा काम गरेबापत आएको सम्पूर्ण तलब उनी शिक्षामा खर्चन्छन्। आफ्ना लागि केही बच्दैन। उनी जुत्ताचप्पल लगाउँदैनन्। उनका दाह्री कपाल सेताम्मे छन्। 'हाम्रो विद्यालयलाई उच्च मावि बनाउँदा उनैले १ लाख १० हजार रुपैयाँ दिने घोषणा गरेपछि थप रकम जुटाउन गाह्रो परेन,' संस्कृत मावि व्यवस्थापन समिति अध्यक्ष मोहराज शर्माले भने, 'पियनले नै एक लाखभन्दा धेरै रकम दिएपछि अरुलाई चन्दा दिन नैतिक दबाब पर्‍यो।' होमबहादुरले पनि समाजसेवा निरन्तर कायम राख्ने बताए। साढे तीन दशकअघि जागिर थाल्दा मासिक डेढ सय रुपैयाँ तलब पाउने होमबहादुर अहिले ८ हजार रुपैयाँ पाउँछन्। 'बाँचुन्जेल श्रम गरेरै खान्छु,' उनले भने, 'कमाएको पैसा सबै विद्यालय र समाजसेवामा लगाउँछु।' होमबहादुरको त्याग देखेर दर्जनौं विद्यालय र सामाजिक संस्थाले सम्मान गरेका छन्। जैदीबाट जनशिक्षित मावि अर्जेवासम्म बाजागाजासहित डोली चढाएर ल्याएको घटना उनलाई ताजै छ। 'मेरो सानो सहयोगलाई पनि अरूले ठूलोे भनी मूल्यांकन गरिदिएकामा हर्ष लाग्यो,' क्षेत्रीले भने, 'अझै उत्साहित भएको छु, आफ्नो अभियानमा समर्पित भएर लाग्नेछु।' हालसम्म अविवाहित होमबहादुरको सम्पत्तिको नाममा एक घरमात्र रहेको छ। गाउँमा कोही बिरामी परे उनले नै बोकेर फलेबास र कुस्मासम्म नै ल्याउने गरेका छन्। 'काम नगरी बस्नै मन लाग्दैन,' होमबहादुरले भने, 'बिहान ५ बजेदेखि बेलुका ८ बजेसम्म काम गर्छु।' गाउँघरमा अप्ठेरो परे होमबहादुरको नै खोजी हुने भएकाले गाउँमा समेत उनी सबैका प्रिय छन्। 'साह्रोगाह्रो परे उनैलाई डाक्छौं,' स्थानीय लक्ष्मीदेवी चालिसेले

Nepaliktofrombkt and Funkynjunky, Instead of directing our energy at cursing at the politicians or being depressed, directing it towards appreciating these people and learning from those who are making an impact is a lot better use of our energy and emotions. Thank you so much for posting these pictures. This is really inspiring. It would be great to have a website with all this information/pictures and videos. It really would. If someone were to do this it would be one of the biggest morale boosters for our Nepal. Seeing your wonderful pictures made me think: wow, if this is just a small number of "Heroes of Nepal" that a small number of us have identified....it made me wonder how many more "Heroes of Nepal" are out there that we don't know anything about. Maybe SAN dai would allow a section of SAJHA to be dedicated to "Heroes of Nepal?" There is a saying: "If there is enough milk in the glass, there is no room to pour ink in the glass." In terms of Nepal, I think it means that if we directed enough energy in celebrating all the good in Nepal, then we leave very little for the negativity and cynicism. Just seeing these pictures and articles on Sajha in "Heroes of Nepal" have made me see Nepal in a lot more positive light. I forgot about all the development that has been going on. Like Stiffler said, it is us the people that need to reward the good in the Heroes of Nepal. It has been the absence of people appreciating all the good in Nepal that has brought down the value of "doing good" in Nepal. I like the fact that Stiffler said that we the people have been responsible for bringing down the standard. We need more Nepalese like Stiffler, NepaliktofromBkt and Funkynjunky to make a difference in setting the standard. You guys are "Heroes of Nepal" in your own way. गोकर्ण बिष्ट नवलपरासी, श्रावण २६ - सरकारी कार्यालयको सिको गर्दै लामो समयदेखि विद्युत महसुल नबुझाएको देशभरीको माओवादी लडाकु शिविरले ९ करोड ८६ लाख महसुल बुझाएको छ । ऊर्जा मन्त्री गोकर्ण बिष्टले सरकारी कार्यालयको लाइन काट्ने घोषणा गरेपछि झस्किएको माओवादी लडाकुको नेतृत्वले सबै शिविरको महसुल प्राधिकरण केन्द्रीय कार्यालयमा बुझाएको हो । सबै मुख्य शिबिर र सहायक शिविरहरुको गरेर कुल ९ करोड ४३ लाख बक्यौतामध्ये गत बैशाख सम्मको महसुलमा जरिवाना थप गरेर रकम बुझाएको हो ।    प्राधिकारण केन्द्रीय कार्यालयको लेखाशाखाले महसुल भुक्तानी भएको जानकारी दिएको हो । माओवादी शिविर नजिकका बिद्युत प्राधिकरण कार्यालयलाई प्राधिकरण केन्द्रीय कार्यालयले महसुल बुझाई सकेकोले तत्काल उनीहरुको लाइन नकाट्नु भन्ने मौखिक आदेश बुधवार दिएको हो  । नवलपरासीस्थित माओवादी चौथो डिभिजनले बुझाउन पर्ने करिब ९९ सय लाख रुपैयाँ मध्ये अधिकांश रकम बुझाई सकेको जानकारी पाएको विद्युत प्राधिकरण क्षेत्रीय कार्यालय बुटवलका बरिष्ठ लेखा अधिकृत प्रेम पौडेलले जानकारी दिए । उनले शिविरको गत बैशाखदेखि यताको महसुल असुल्न बाँकी रहेको र त्यो पनि छिट्टै बुझाउने आश्वासन पाएको जनाए ।
